A Family That Listens Together

Three generations in one household, all living with visual impairment. Our team sat down to hear how they get through a day.

There are three of them in the household: the grandmother, her daughter, and her grandson. All three are visually impaired. A small child moves around them as they talk, and a white cane rests against the wall behind the bench.

Our team went to their home in Voinjama to listen. That was the whole assignment — to sit down on the bench with them, turn on the microphone, and let them describe a day.

What a day looks like, from the inside, is a system. Who fetches. Who cooks. Who knows the route to the market and how many steps it takes. Who holds the youngest. Disability in a rural Liberian household is rarely a matter of one person needing help; it is a matter of a family reorganising itself, quietly and without any of the assistive infrastructure that would be taken for granted elsewhere, around what each member can and cannot do.

They are not helpless. They are under-resourced. Those are two completely different sentences and only one of them is true here.

When the story went out, people responded. Our team raised funds and returned to the house to hand the money over in person — counted into the grandmother's hands, in front of her daughter and her grandson — and to bring a food supply and other household materials.

We would rather you remember the bench than the handover. Three generations, sitting in a row, telling a stranger with a microphone exactly how they manage.
